Remember high-school try outs? The dreaded days where you feel like there is a bright spotlight upon you, and everyone is watching, and time stands still?
My girls are all going through various Try-outs this week. Four, for Varsity Basketball. Three, for Choir. Three, for the Drama production of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” I wish I could be in three places at once and help administrate all three! But, for now, I am the proud mother who gets to simply watch from afar and live vicariously through their excitement.
I suppose, in my own way, I’ve been doing my own Try-Outs all week. Mostly in the kitchen. Sigh. I thought I was a decent cook, but have recently discovered how little I really know about baking. I can whip things together and make them taste good, but when it comes to following a recipe…not so good. And here in Kijabe, you MUST follow recipes that involve the oven and baking. The altitude is much much higher, so Colorado cousins, now I can relate 🙂 Everything bakes differently. I even had to whip my lemon frosting today extra long this afternoon. And my three-layer mint bars tasted rather sickly sweet tonight. Oh, I’ll quit whining. It’s my own fault. After all these years of Mom and Nora poking fun at me for not following recipes to the tee, I suppose it deserves me right for having to learn the hard way. So, back to try outs. More soon.
