Who, me? Tigresse Woods? Well, not really. I am certainly NOT a pro-golf athlete, let alone comparable to Tiger Woods…
So, life here at RVA has led me into some unexpected situations as of late. Namely, golf! The PE coach is quite ill, and so they needed someone to fill in for the Juniors’ Golf Unit from now until the end of Term 2, which is March 26. I must admit, it wasn’t my preference to fill into this position, but God is showing me to be ready for the good works that He has prepared in advance for me to do, however out of my comfort zone that may be.
So, here I am with a group of my students from last week, who all got to dress up for their skills test in which they played a 5-hole, par-3 makeshift course that we create around the perimeter of Upper Field. It was fun! Since we live in Africa and have limited resources, each PE student is provided with an old 9-iron. So, chipping and putting produce rather unpredictable shots, but the point is for them to just learn the basics…so, we make do.
Now, this week, I’m starting a whole new unit with a different set of students. This morning, we kicked off our first day with basic safety, the basic grip, and the concept of “twist and hinge.” It was really exciting to watch the kids step up to the “fairway” and get a couple good swings and a few make some great, straight shots.
It’s funny that even in Kenya, golf has found its way back into my life…watch out, Nams, I’ll be back to play with a smoother, straighter, more “wild” game 🙂
