A Terp at Heart

Terp: Short for Terrapin, a kind of turtle, and the University of Maryland’s team mascot. And, you guessed it: I’m one at heart! Ok, ok. Terrapins are slow and tough and rather ackwardly waddling creatures! But, I love ’em. Growing up, Dad used to take me on “date-nights” to Terps’ basketball games at the original gym, Cole Field House. We always got Checkers burgers and fries along the way, and I was on cloud-nine the whole night because it was special-time with “daddy.” (Even though I usually got to go to the Terps’ games when they played some random team from Australia or a non-ACC conference team…).

Once the Terps switched over to the Comcast Center, and we lost season tickets due to the astronomical amounts of money you had to donate in order to secure a reservation, I only have managed to make it to a few more games now and again. This being my Senior year of college, I decided that I simply HAD to make at least a couple games for the last time as an official UMD student.

So, thanks to kind friends and acquaintances, I managed to get to a football game last October and a basketball game (UMD vs. Clemson) last Sunday night. Both were very fun to attend, as I played the role of a devoted fan (ha…hardly!) I won’t even mention the outcome of the basketball game. If you watched it, you will understand me when I say that it was quite devastating. A 20-point lead blown, only to lose by 3 points at the buzzer!  Oh, well.  Like I said, I’m a Terp at heart, so I will never lose faith in my Terrapins!  March madness, here we come!
